THE INSTITUTE
The Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN) is a professional regulatory body of Public Analysts established by Decree No. 100 of 1992(now IPAN ACT CAP.I.16 LFN 2004) to train, examine, register Public Analysts and regulates their practice.
A Public Analyst is a registered member of the Institute, who by virtue of his/her knowledge, training, skill, competence and integrity is authorised by law to carry out analysis and other functions on consumer and health-related products such as: Food, Drugs, Medical Devices, Cosmetics, Water, Chemicals, Chemically and Biologically-based consumer products etc. and issue certificates regarding their composition, quality, safety and efficacy.
QUALIFICATION FOR REGISTRATION AS TRAINEE
Some specified entry qualifications acceptable to the governing Council of the Institute are Bachelor degree or Higher National Diploma in the following disciplines: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Pharmacy, Microbiology, Food Science and Technology, Laboratory Science and Technology etc.
PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS
All applicants must undergo the Institute’s training programme and sit for
and pass its Professional examination(s) before admission into membership.
There are three levels of Professional Examination at Postgraduate level:
Foundation
Professional Examination I and
Professional Examination II
Placement into any of the examination levels depends on the applicant’s qualification(s) and years of relevant experience.
A candidate must pass one level before proceeding to the next.
The Foundation Programme allows a candidate to be grounded in theoretical background necessary to understand the principles and methods of analysis of products and substances.
The Professional I training affords the candidate to undergo intense practical training in analysis including instrumentation in its variety.
Professional II exposes the candidate to life situations. This is the final stage of professional training.
A successful completion of professional II examination confers the status of a Public Analyst on the candidate after having been inducted.
CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT OF APPLICANTS ON THE INSTITUTE’S LEVELS OF TRAINING
The following criteria have been adopted for placing applicants into the Institute’s three levels of training.
FOUNDATION LEVEL
Applicants with less than five (5) years of post qualification relevant experience should be recommended for Foundation level of training.
PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION I (P.E. I.)
Applicants with five (5) to nine (9) years post qualification experience with relevant higher degrees should be recommended for Professional Examination I
PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION II (P.E. II.)
Applicants with minimum of ten (10) years post qualification experience in the laboratory should be recommended for P.E.II.
CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT ON SPECIAL PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION (SPE) CATEGORY
Applicants who are eligible to be placed on Special Professional Examination (SPE) category, which is the fourth category, must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum of Masters degree in Analytical Sciences
- Minimum of 20 years of post qualification continuous bench experience in the analysis of materials
- Must have attained enviable professional status which could be either in Academics, Public or Private Establishment with job closely related to the Institute
