Practice of the profession
The practice of the profession involves the establishment of a
laboratory by individual Public Analysts or group (Laboratory
ownership by partnership). Samples are received for analysis
followed by issuance of certificate of fitness for intended
purpose or otherwise, after appropriate laboratory analysis.
Clientele include individuals, corporate organisations,
manufacturers, importers/exporters, public sector, NGOs, etc.
Other Public Analysts who may not own laboratory are gainfully
employed in private and public sectors or as Consultants to
various organisations.
Some of the varieties of products, which are frequently analysed
in laboratories by Public Analysts in their day-to-day
practices, are:
Food
Products (Raw and Processed)
These include canned foods, salt, sugar, milk, oil, spirit, soft
dinks, beer, cocoa, coffee, biscuits, fruits, etc.
Pharmaceutical Products
Pharmaceutical raw materials, finished products, e.g. tablets,
capsules, caplets, solid and liquid injectables, disinfectants,
syrups, suspensions, medicated soaps, etc.
Cosmetic Products
All raw materials and processed cosmetic products e.g.
detergents, soaps, creams, pomades, relaxers, perfumes, etc.
Water
Samples under this heading include bottled and bagged water,
borehole and well waters, swimming pool water, fishponds and
industrial effluents.
Chemicals
The whole range of industrial and agricultural chemicals and
products are included. Examples are alcohols, acids, water
treatment chemicals, dyes, pesticides, fertilizers,
preservatives, etc.
Medical Devices
Examples in this class are sanitary pads and other wool
products, syringes, and implants.
